Oh, things you can’t shake. Snap. Well, I wrote all that now. Hopefully someone is/was amused.
1. Sticking my tongue out when I’m deep in thought
Shoot, we’re all fam. May as well start with something patently embarrassing. I’m much better with this (an ex-girlfriend saying it was cute made me conscious of it) than I used to be, but it still happens occasionally.
2. Dancing in the car (especially when ‘club’ songs play)
Anyone remember that show Motormouth on VH1? If you imagine a dancing version of that show, that’s pretty much me – well, if I’m alone. I’m sure people in nearby cars think I’m crazy. Sometimes I even do old routines (I was in a dance troupe in undergrad).
3. Watching the news based on anchors
Mentioned this a time or two…it was once so bad that I had an all-day schedule of who to watch at what times. Actually, I still have the schedule. Just can’t follow it like I used to. I look at it like this: if I’m going to watch the news, I may as well be visually rewarded. Watching a man on the news is like paying $5 for a box of store-brand cereal.
4. Waking up early
No matter what time I go to sleep, I’m always up before 9. Seriously: if I want to wake up after 10 I can’t go to sleep earlier than 6. I blame my dad for this. Somehow I got my mom’s gift for staying up late and his for waking up early. Bad combination.
5. Listening to 80s pop music, especially on drives home (home as in Lauderdale)
I don’t even want to shake this one. Why would I? It breaks the monotony of listening to current music, helps me stay alert since I know all of the words, and it’s lighthearted and funny. If I take a trip longer than four hours, there’ll be some Wham! (can’t forget the explanation point), some Genesis, Hall & Oates…sooner or later I’ll have a playlist from the greatest period of time popular music has ever known (the first half of the 1990s), but until then I’ll ride to the 80s.
6. Running
I’d run everywhere if I could, and usually do when I get a chance – even if inside (although the practice has been outlawed due to the exploits of one Orenthal James Simpson, who was the last black man known to run indoors for non-sporting purposes). Can’t imagine how many times I’ve almost run into people around a corner or on the other side of a door, which is funny because I see people bump into each other and wonder how it happens.
